Technical Specifications for the AWare Technologies Military Vital Signs Monitor
The AWare Technologies Military Vital Signs Monitor prototype provides medics and commanders with remote triage capabilities. The 3oz monitor combines sensors, analytics, a lithium-polymer battery system with a medium-range 2.4GHz radio. It continuously senses and analyzes heart rate, respiration, and physical activity, running for up to 90 hours on a single battery charge.
The Military Vital Signs Wearable Personnel Monitor can be configured to operate in "telemetry" mode or "proactive" mode. In telemetry mode, the monitor continuously streams raw sensor data across the radio interface. In proactive mode, the wearable maintains radio silence until an anomaly or problem is detected. In proactive mode the monitor can also be remotely interrogated to determine its status.
Sensors
- Three axis +-2G low noise accelerometer — 8-bit resolution 50Hz sampling rate
- Physiology chest strap — combined Polar heart monitor and piezoelectric respiration transducer.
Analytics
In proactive mode, the monitor continuously analyzes sensor data
but maintains radio silence unless and until anomalies or problems are detected. If if circumstances warrant action the radio is activated
and a distress call is sent. Conditions that can be detected by this
system include:
- Irregular heart beat or cessation of heart activity
- Cessation of breathing
- Shivering due to hypothermia
- Tremors and dyskinesia associated with neurotoxin exposure
In addition, AWare's continuous real-time motion analysis is capable
of discriminating between vehicular motion and walking or running, and
between a sedentary or sleeping user and a lifeless user.
Radio Options
- Bluetooth, a 2.4GHz frequency-hopping spread-spectrum protocol that is natively supported by a wide range of Bluetooth-enabled devices, including PDAs, laptops, and cellular phones. Bluetooth provides a nominal 10m communications range.
- AWare Proprietary low-power 2.4GHz fixed-frequency protocol for short-range communications. Intended for short-range, line-of-sight links, this radio system burns 1/10th the power of Bluetooth, allowing for very long continuous radio operations. Nominal 10m line-of-sight range.
- Medium-range 900/866MHz low-power fixed-frequency protocol. Provides significantly increased range (100m) even under indoor use conditions.
Physical Properties
- Size: 2.2” x 3.2” x 1.1”
- Weight: 3oz
- Enclosure materials: Vacuum-formed ABS Plastic (65mil)
Power and Runtime
The Military Vital Signs Monitor contains a 900mAh li-poly battery with built-in battery charger. On a full charge, the battery is capable of powering the system for as long as five days of active continuous transmission, depending on choice of radio. In proactive mode, the battery is capable of powering the the system for weeks.
